Suicide has always been a tragic event for any person to read or witness and Edna’s suicide as tragic or triumphant could be considered to be one of them. After reading it almost felt abrupt and ambiguous that could be seen as inevitable defeat of a woman vainly striving towards autonomy and self-agency in a patriarchal society. The decision of suicide simply feels like inevitable defeat and not triumphant escape. With the idea of being caged Edna took her life and some might assume the death to be real victory because Edna broke the societal restraint. There have been several ways to judge Edna’s suicide but each of them offers a diverse perception. It can be a fact that every reader does not like the idea and ending of novel but they must also understand the whole concept. Moreover, the novel mainly depends upon societal constraints and is not possible to be escaped.

In this entire novel, one can easily assume that Edna was in great dilemma for finding true love. Various forms of love were showcased although each proved to be unsuccessful. Edna was never satisfied in relationship she had. The love was merely present on surface and it can be specially defined as life where she was confined for living other than life which Edna yearned for.

The author has strived to show that Edna’s marriage was to predict modern portrayal of love and relationship to show the concept of love. Such relationship is keen perception according to author’s aspect of attitude for love and romance. The association between Robert and Edna was about infatuation as they enjoyed talking rather than being at each other. The role of Arobin has introduced to Sex for Edna and it was completely foreign to her or husband.

Edna felt to be a real individual and enjoyed act of lovemaking other than pleasure. Edna has felt like an awakening one from dream to reality of life and she realized it when she became incapable of going back to what she had previously. “The Awakening” has typically criticized to a great patriarchal structure of 19^thcentury of society. Edna failed to recognize the fact rather than growing through awakening. Edna turned into a child ultimately and killed herself as a symbolic return to mother because she was not able to become an adult. Edna became emotionally unequipped in dealing with awakening and as per ideals she was not a fit to live in a society.

In “The Awakening” we witnessed a different portrayal of society where women have limit in each and every thing around them. Women were considered as husband’s property and were expected to live and act according to husbands. Edna’s life was more like feminist and feminism has always come with a price where less people are strong enough to understand or tolerate individual freedom. The author has incredibly illustrated the dilemma portraying possible consequences to become enlightened beyond context of broader social movement. Edna aimed for a life with freedom but she failed as the society had been extremely limited for women.
