Answer:

Dear XXX,

This communication is regarding the last conversation we had wherein you informed me that you have you are going to Holland to take part in the physician-assisted suicide program. As a healthcare professional, I have encountered ethical dilemmas in due course of clinical practice, and I am aware of the fact that ethical dilemmas have a deep impact on the psychological decision one takes up as they fear to contravene on other imperative moral decisions. Coming to your case, I believe emotions must not overtake reasoning.

In your case, the objective, in terms of what achievement is to be made, is to relieve you from the pain you have been suffering from. The options you have at present are to carry on with the treatment process with the hope that you would recover eventually and to consider assisted suicide so that you are free from pain and life. I would like to remind you that the complex values regarding your decision are that your family is at stake. You are valuable for your family, and they would not be able to bear the pain of loosing you. I would henceforth bring in front of you the significance of the decision that you are going to take and the underlying implications. The process of physician-assisted death can itself be painful at times and the realisation that death is approaching might not be acceptable, further leading to deterioration of your health condition. You are presented with the option of cessation of active treatment and can be given out in combination with effective pain relief. The differences between passive and active assisted-death hold much importance and I advice you to study the same in depth for understanding the concept appropriately before taking the final decision. I would mention in here that the loss of dignity and fear of burdening other must not be the reason behind your tough decision. You must, therefore, consider the resolution to the arising dilemma considerably.

I would advise you not to be let your personal beliefs and thoughts take over the realities of medical care and give the medical care and your care givers all the possible scope to bring you out from your present situation.  Though I do not have the intention of disregarding your wishes and mental and physical wellbeing, I could like to extend further help so that you are better able to come to terms with your condition. It is advisable that you approach a professional who can act as your counsellor so that you are able to cope up with your agony, distress, depression and frustration. Your family would also assist in this process. Endorsing assisted-death would set an example whereby it would diminish all hopes, expectations and optimism that other terminally-ill patients like you live with.

I hope you would take the appropriate decision after considering my advice and considering all the possible options. Looking forward to hear from your soon. Wishing you and your family all the strengths to come out of this difficult situation.

Regards,

XXXX
