Question:

What are the three dimensions in which the term "convergence" has been applied? What does each of these areas of convergence entail? Why has media industry convergence not occurred as rapidly as predicted?

Research the issue of media convergence in the the newspaper industry. Do you believe that convergence will be good for the practice of journalism? Develop a reasoned argument on either side of the issue.

Answer:

The term “Convergence” according to most of the theorists as opined by Grant and Wilkinson (2009) means “union of two or more things”. However, there are arguments regarding what exactly is coming together. On the other hand, Jenkins (2014) defines the term “Convergence” as “the flow of substance across a wide range of media platforms”.

The following essay discusses the three dynamics of Convergence and its implication in the media industry. This includes the issue of media convergence in the journalism sector. The essay also encompasses the practice of the convergence in journalism and highlights the advantages of it in the mentioned industry.

Media Convergence according to Jenkins (2006) is a constant procedure that broadly assembles both the old media system as well as accepts the modernized media technologies to work efficiently in the long run. In the book Media Convergence: Networked Digital Media in Everyday Life by Graham Meikle and Sherman Young, media convergence can be implicit in three main dynamics: Technical, Industrial and Social.

  • Technological: media convergence in terms of technical dimension implies the arrangement of computing, interactions and content around a podium of digital network system.
  • Industrial: the implementation of media convergence in terms of industrialized dimension means the involvement of well-known digital media organizations like Apple, Google, Microsoft and other established provider of media content.
  • Social: A major role in terms of media convergence is played by the rise of social media networks such as Facebook, You Tube and the development of user-created account.

Convergence in journalism means the implications of skilled technologies like using of broadcast, photography, print and internet sites (Newman & Levine 2012). This innovative form of journalism has made it more proficient and the industry can run successfully in this present competitive market as this include more detailed elements of the components covered by the journal.
