Introduction

This essay represents an analysis of the short story titled- ‘In love,’ written by a Moroccan Novelist Mohamed Said Raihani. The analysis focuses on the setting of the story and further develops how settings shapes story.

Setting

The time is between the end of dusk and the rise of night as the protagonist sits under a tree after a long day which has gone with certain notions in his mind such as how he has been looking absent minded and that too so much that his teacher had to interrupt, how his limbs are cold and whether this is all because of love or not. But as the dusk sets in all of such things vanished and he started to see how the tree felt like as wise as his philosophy teacher and how he told him to how to pay attention to- “this” lecture “here” and “now”.

And now he is thinking- “‘now’ I am observing ‘this’ sunset agonizing ‘here’. This shows how vividly the protagonist has described the setting of the story which is purely dominated by the environment and time of the day. It is a romanticizing environment which is different from any confined set, it is under a tree having a blanket of stars above. The time setting is also a factor contributing to the setting, the night time and the sunset gives the romantic element to the scene and that is why protagonist has this picture of love between the stars and how his thoughts are away from the hubbub of the day time (Koester, 2020).

The setting of the scene automatically brings out the emotional and romantic mood of the protagonist and this wouldn’t have been very handsome combination of love and sun as it is of love and stars and the sunset horizon.

By the grace of this setting the author symbolises two stars as one male and the other female which shows how the author has beautifully added personification figure of speech.  The protagonist is observing the love so powerful that even the stars are thousands of light years away from each other but still in love and love is so strong despite the distance they would die if it does not exist.

He is showing how this scientific and mechanical coordination of stars and other celestial bodies is a kind of love that have bounded them forever. Love is reflected by the author in every single sight and word such as how the setting of night has been shown as the glittery presence due to the presence of stars. And not only the sky but the presence of the tree in the setting is showing how cool does the trunk of the tree is making his body and his soul after a long day of tiering emotions holding peace back from him (San Segundo, 2017).

The setting of the scene is the prime reason of the dreamy mood of the protagonist and how the soothing and peaceful attributes of night time calms down the rage of emotions and his body.

At last, the protagonist shows how now the full rise of moon be taken into this beautiful picture as well.
