Question:

Analyze how cross-cultural psychology can positively influence policies and practices regarding immigration.

Answer:

Cross-cultural psychology explains that human behavior is greatly influenced by the psychological phenomena or cultural differences. According to American Psychological Association (APA) the human behavior is affected by the culture and society as explained in sociological model. For example, in the immigration, the behavior of the residing people towards the immigrants greatly determines their well-being, acculturation and prejudice and immigration policy of the country. Cultural factors like political participation, economic behavior, value and social solidarity influence how the immigration policies should be developed according to the cross-cultural psychology of the different countries. The receiving climate like local community and social climate in which the immigrants will live and shape their lives should be positive and welcoming for them. This would result in the positive influence on the development and sustainability of the immigration policies. This is turn explains the cross-cultural psychology (native behavior) that have an influence on the immigration policy (apa.org, 2013).

The negative consequences of living with prejudice among the immigrants are of great concern among the psychologists. Two consequences of living with prejudice are mental health issues like anxiety, trauma and fear due to racism and social exclusion affecting self-esteem and quality of life. Immigrants are marginalized and are second-class citizens affecting their mental and physical well-being. These consequences are of great concern for the psychologists and require their support. They can promote linguistically and culturally appropriate services, advancement of psychological and scientific research and psychologist training who can work with the immigrants and keep them informed about public policy. Psychologists can also support by meeting their behavioral and mental needs of migrants (apa.org, 2010).
