Transformation leaders are viewed as change agents in their organization. They develop, build, model, and encourage the vision for the organization. Transformational leadership is a structure of leadership whereby, the leader collaborates with subordinates to pinpoint the change needed, building a foresight to conduct the change through motivation, trust, inspiration, and accomplishing the change together with dedicated group of members (Gumusluoglu & Ilsev, 2009). This form of leadership also inspires people in achieving to outstanding outcome. It gives workers self-determination over precise jobs, as well as the power to make choices once they have been trained (Barbuto, 2005; Barnett, McCormick, & Conners, 2001; Bono & Judge, 2004; Gumusluoglu & Ilsev, 2009). A transformational leader leads by example and sometimes called quiet leaders. Their style of leadership tends to use communication, inspiration, motivation or empathy to engage their followers. They are identified to possess confidence, courage and willingness to make sacrifices for the greater good (Bryant, 2003).

Organizational Leadership

Organizational leadership is a structure of management that dwells in bringing out what is finest for individuals and for a group as a whole concurrently (Bennis, 1959). This form of leadership strives to qualify anyone to lead in any position in an organisation. It also includes reviewing leadership in various forms of organization structures, such as profit and non profit organizations. There are vast organizational and transformational leaders in the world. But in this paper will be able to discuss about one organizational and transformational leader who has been of great impact to individuals and groups (Barbuto, 2005).

One of the most influential, inspirational and transformational leader I will be discussing is Oprah Gail Winfrey. She has carried out a lot of vision and mission which has impacted and has been greatly achieved in our today’s world.  Also, I will be discussing on one of those visions that has impacted and brought change to our present communities of today.

On January 29, 1954, Oprah Gail Winfrey was born in isolated farm in Kosciusko, Mississippi, United States of America. Oprah’s name was meant to be Orpah, but due to spelling and pronunciation difficulty, she was called Oprah (Allen, 2014).

  She is a great Advocate for women empowerment and freedom leader with great vision and mission that has been achieved through her commitment  to create a foundation for educating and empowering women of today’s world. With the influence of media, Oprah Winfrey was able to develop exceptional relations with people around the World. For over twenty five years, Oprah is able to entertain, illuminate and stir up millions of viewers in her award winning ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’. Due to her accomplishment as a world media leader, she has not only become a renowned female figure, but also a very reputable woman global (Oprah Foundation, 2017a).

  Winfrey’s career in broadcasting started in Nashville at the time she was still in high school. She was 19 years of age; when she became the first black American lady to broadcast the news at WTVF-TV in Nashville. She later migrated to Baltimore to broadcast the ‘Six O’ Clock News’ and later on became a local talk show emcee called “People Are Talking” (Oprah Foundation, 2017a).

Oprah Gail Winfrey is a good example of a transformational leader. She is not only the daytime television show queen as many people know her, but also she is a philanthropist. Winfrey is known as one of the most significant women in the globe. Oprah makes use of her influence, leverage and resourcefulness to help the less privileged in the society. She offers millions of dollars donations every year to charities. Oprah Winfrey’s foundation is a non-profitable, volunteer organization that motivates and inspires people to impact positively into the lives of others. Winfrey and her group organize projects in under-served regions to provide learning schemes and render help to families to fulfil essential human needs and restore their self-worth. Her foundation concentrates on the eradication of poverty, child neglect, diseases and more. In addition, Winfrey has concentrated her energy and time on creating the foundation. She created this foundation to develop her leadership academy for girls in South Africa.

  Oprah Winfrey’s foundation is a free, suburban academy for girls academically gifted in grade classes (Oprah Foundation, 2017a). Most of these young ladies come from low background families that cannot afford education for their children and without the Oprah’s Academy; these girls would not have a chance to having a good education. She makes sure the academy educates young ladies to become a better human to the society. It educates them on how to make wise decision of their own and reputable figure in their communities(Oprah Foundation, 2017b). This foundation also serves as an exemplary academy to the rest of the globe.

  This was foundation also creates awareness for HIV/AIDS through community based programs, public outreach and education. She makes provision for treatment and care for girls infected. For those affected, counseling is done through care, treatment and preventive measures such as blood screening to control the spread of the virus. Her organizations also assist girls to start projects and own their own businesses. She developed this in order to make these girls to be dependent and to avoid asking help every now and then. Oprah and her group are passionate individuals with burning desire to advocate the rights of the less privileged girls in the society.

  Oprah Winfrey achieved all this by setting up donation opportunities to the foundation, which has been of great help to the foundation. This donation has helped these girls in getting efficient academic support. The donations also help girls with everything they need and has contributed to getting enough uniforms and standard textbooks required to help them in their academy lives. Furthermore, the donations to Oprah’s foundation are used to make full range of educational materials available to the girls for their academies. Oprah Winfrey foundation has been developed in different parts of the world to serve the under-served communities and provide them with good standard education.

Oprah has managed to deliver her vision through inspirational and transformational leadership style. She combines management effective project with delicate change management. This has assisted in delivering the changes required with maximum aids of her devotees. Communicating each respective roles and tasks clearly to her workers has helped her as leader to connect to the plans. Oprah made her followers to understand their obligation, also to know how to determine their success. She also exercised self-discipline and stamina to play a vital role in her leadership skills in order not to let herself down. Oprah practiced management by walking around, in order to stay connected to their daily activities. She focused on the attention of her followers, and assisted them in achieving their goals and dreams. She built up trust in her workers by being open and honest in her interactions with them (Oprah Foundation, 2017b).

Winfrey is always tireless, avid, and passionate and is not just a leader involved and concerned in the task; she focuses in assisting each group member succeeds as well. Oprah is seen as a leader that makes individuals and supporters to make everyone to move to a higher height of virtuous and motivation. By the means strength of her foresight and character, she was able to motivate supporters to change perception, expectation, to motivate them to work together concerning common goals (Oprah Foundation, 2017b).

Oprah Gail Winfrey leadership style supports the causes to fight against abuse to women, slavery and human trafficking, rape/sexual abuse, poverty, physical challenges, disputes, miscellaneous, illiteracy, hunger. She also supports the development of good health facilities, encourages family support, good maintenance of the environment, education, growth of businesses/economy, and encourages disaster relief management, creative arts, civil rights, eradication of HIV and AIDS, helping the needy, encouraging fostering and adoption and etcetera. She is the kind of a leader to look up to in order to achieve your own visions and missions. Oprah has greatly evaluated, modelled, communicated, encouraged experimentations, built up commitment and achieved her visions of touching the lives of others. Oprah Winfrey is also inspirational and motivational model to every young and old woman in the world.


Transformational leadership style is all about creating inspiration vision that will be of great impact the organization and the community. A transformational leader needs to inspire and motivate it followers in order to achieve it vision (Gumusluoglu & Ilsev, 2009). Furthermore, this form of leadership needs confidence, energy and courage to be able to achieve its goal and needs to guide it followers. As a transformational leader he/she as to lead by example, he/she has to be ready to listen to the ideas of his/her workers. The vision and mission of a transformational leader set his/her team purpose. He/she needs to understand the values of their group firm and partly run an intelligent review of situation and chose a better progressive way within it.
