Question:

Article: Software Development Risk Management Model – A Goal Driven Approach

Author: Shareeful Islam

Answer:

Various unanticipated problems are faced by the projects related to software development which also pose various risk in the development environment. Similar problems are faced by the software development projects on repeated basis even though there is advancement in technology. As per one study almost 20% projects related to software development are failed and almost 46% projects experience the increased cost because of which functionality of the project is reduced.

Risk management related to software development consider the goals which includes there different factors that are schedule, cost, and quality. There are number of goals such as those projects which are related to offshore, executed in various cultures and locations, these goals provide their support to the process of business which is critical in nature, regulations compliance, security and safety.

The main purpose of research conducted by author is to provide proposal related to modeling framework which support to the risk management in software development by considering the components which are technical and non-technical in nature while developing the project at starting stage. The contribution of this research results in goal- driven software development risk management modeling (GSRM), and this framework mainly consider the factors like assessing the risk, control, etc. it can be said that primary function of this framework is to integrate the activity which is related to risk management within the phase of Requirement Engineering (RE) for the purpose of identifying and controlling the risk at the begining. It must be noted that GSRM is the combination of four layers, and these four layers are:

  • Goal layer- GSRM is initiated with the process of identifying the risk, elaborating the goals because these are goals are related to development of components at initial stage for the purpose of success of project.
  • Risk-obstacle layer- this helps in identifying the risk factors related to software development such as those issues which rose at the stage of early development and it influence the goals in negative manner.
  • Assessment layer- this layer is mainly used for the purpose of analyzing the risk event which caused because of the identified risk factor.
  • Treatment layer- the main aim of this layer is to select the factors which reduce the risk.
