Question

You should begin brainstorming what greater point your essay will uphold (your thesis), and how you can prove it using examples or illustrations.  You can brainstorm by making clusters, a list, free writing, or a simple outline.  Think about as many examples as you can to help explain and prove your thesis, and fill in some details, too.  Later you will choose only the most effective and relevant ideas in your brainstorm to include in your final draft.  Place your full brainstorm and proposed thesis statement.

Choose one of the topics provided for your illustration essay:

  • a family activity you are passionate about
  • shopping for a used car
  • expectations of coworkers
  • remedies for stress
  • generation gaps

Answer

As a family passes on from one generation to the other, the opinions and ideological perceptions of the world of the former generation will be bound to differ from that of the latter. The thesis of the present essay is to establish the fact that generation gap does exist even today, and that the perceived gap between the younger and elder ones of a family can create relationship rift and conflicts.

During the 1960s, generation gap became an important concept when it was being found out that the younger generation, also known as the Baby Boomers, held highly distinguishable opinions in terms of music or political views from their former generation. The accelerating rate of change in the world, especially with the advent of technological progress and scientific advancement, compelled the younger generation become more tech-savvy, rapid thinkers and fast decision-makers. While the parents and the grandparents are still reading newspapers to get the news about the world, the younger people tend to rely on tabs for gaining access to the news across the globe. Besides, in the postmodernist era, globalization has also emerged to be an important trend, whereby the recent generation people have become more aware of the global culture, and thus accept any ideal or norm with greater ease and spontaneity. However, the older generation is less acquainted with this, and thus they adhere strictly to their parochial and traditional set of beliefs and norms which they refuse to transgress.

To conclude, it has been found out that generation gap had previously existed, and it is more relevant today, considering the rapid progress of the world. It is undeniable that the socio-economic factors as well as the technological factors that each new generation is exposed to, leas to the generation gap.
