Introduction

In order to improve ethical performance, effective leadership skills and personal traits of a leader can be taken into account to solve some of the modern day management issues. In this particular study, an interview session with Akio Toyoda, the CEO and President of Toyota Motor Corporation, has been described to describe the leadership, motivation, and ethical values of the leader. Precisely, the leadership style of Akio Toyoda can be identified as a blend of transformational and entrepreneurial leadership. In this particular study, the outcome of the interview session has been elaborated providing the interview questions and reply from the leader (Boylan, 2016). Decisively, based on the answers, the leadership style, motivation strategy, and ethical values of Akio Toyoda have been illustrated.

Interview Questions

The interview questions that have been asked to Mr. Akio Toyoda have been presented herein below:

  1. How would you define leadership?
  2. As a leader, how would you deal with the situation when the workforces on your team aren’t pulling their weight?
  3. What is the greatest leadership challenge you have ever faced? How did you manage the challenge? What were the consequences of the proceedings?
  4. How would you like to define your style of communication?
  5. Describe your personal actions leading to convey your workforce that ethical behavior must be prioritized within the business functions?
  6. How your personal actions have influenced ethical behaviors of your workforce?

Leadership, Motivation, and Ethical Values

On the basis of the above interview conducted with Akio Toyoda, his leadership style can be described as a combination of transformational as well as entrepreneurial leadership (Orridge, 2009). Transformational leadership is an approach that inspires the entire community and influences the belief of the employees by gathering their wills and provides confidence to work according to the vision of the leader (Kelly, 2016). Akio Toyoda describes that leadership is the ability to set challenging goals and find ways to achieve the set targets. On the other hand, he said that “A leader is the one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way” (Dhanabhakyam, & Umadevi, 2012). Akio Toyoda motivates his employees by synchronizing his vision with the employees and pulling them to the idea rather than pushing it (Burns, 2012). He motivates his employees to actively participate in their respective roles and put their best in order to achieve the objectives of the firm (Dhanabhakyam, & Umadevi, 2012).

On the other hand, Akio Toyoda acts as a self employed individual in the firm that makes him an entrepreneurial leader. He believes in setting goals and developing solutions to achieve the desired targets (Kelly, 2016). Toyoda acts as an inspiration for the employees by showing them the right path to success. According to him, the greatest leadership issue that can be faced by an entrepreneur is the resistance to change (Gayeski, 2008). Akio Toyoda has challenged the old Japanese executive method in which the top level managements are rarely seen in the work field (Orridge, 2009). But, Toyoda personally visit the office sites, dealership shops, plants and loading docks to interact with the employees. The personal interaction with the employees develops a trust and loyalty in their mind that benefits the organization through positive performance of the workforce.

Furthermore, Akio Toyoda has high standards of ethical and moral conducts. Toyoda is held in high regard exemplifying his charisma by the employees of Toyota. Toyoda has a strong vision for the future and challenges the norms of Toyota by intellection stimulation (Huang, & Paterson, 2017). He demonstrates respects to others and influences his employees to do the same to maintain an ethical corporate culture in the organization. Hence, his ethical approach helps the management of Toyota to maintain harmony and peace at workplace (Kelly, 2016). Toyoda promotes fairness, integrity, honesty, equality, and rights of individuals so that the corporate employees can follow the same in the business practices (Perreault, 2017).

According to Toyoda, his personal actions have promoted a high level of dignity, integrity, and honesty to influence positive relationship among the employees (Huang, & Paterson, 2017). Furthermore, his leadership approach and ethical actions have helped the management of Toyota to develop a corporate culture with strong bonding among the workers (Kelly, 2016). The ethical actions of Toyoda have enhanced responsibility and accountability among the employees to do the right things.

By considering the leadership style of Akio Toyoda, it can be seen that the combination of transformational and entrepreneurial leadership approach has helped him to lead the organization in an ethical way. Mr. Toyoda directly communicates with his stakeholders to maintain a strong relationship with his subordinates (Gayeski, 2008). His ethical leadership approach has helped him to maintain a corporate culture in the organization and avoid conflicts among the workforce (Burns, 2012). Furthermore, the entrepreneurial leadership approach of Mr. Toyoda has helped the company to seek better reputation and growth over the international market.

Conclusion

On the basis of the above discussion, Akio Toyoda has described leadership as a way to set goals and influence the employees to move towards a common direction to seek success in the long run. It is important for a leader to develop communication skills and interact with the stakeholders in order to understand the current factors of the internal as well as external market. An ethical and transformational leadership approach helps the management to identify the risk and develop adequate strategy to mitigate the issues. Furthermore, ethical leadership helps the management to maintain peace and harmony at workplace by developing good relationship among the workforce. Conclusively, ethical leadership is the key to maintain corporate culture in the organization that helps the organization to survive and seek growth in the current business environment.
